To go from merely a good swordsman to a great one required practice and a lot of it. To do this safely the Japanese used wooden training swords called bokkens. Although still used effectively today they could split, crack, splinter and warp if the elements or training overburdened the wood, which could be expensive.
Cold Steel has come up with a great alternative using the heaviest commercial grade polypropylene available they found that could mimic the size, weight and feel of a real tanto with none of the drawbacks of wood. Nearly impervious to the elements, cut resistant, virtually unbreakable and very stiff, this tanto will last for years.
Bought tanto, katana and wakizashi for my son and we fight with them pretty frequently. All three are very tough. The proportions and weight make them feel very substantial in the hand. If you compare with the price of flimsy nerf swords, this is a great value, because basically these are pretty formidable as real weapons. I've also found that a piece of foam pipe insulation slides right over the blade and will keep the wife from feinting.
