OVERVIEW

Designed by Major-General John Gaspard Le Marchant, the 1796 pattern light cavalry saber was based on Central and Eastern European hussar swords. As a young captain, he observed the clumsy design of the heavy, overly long 1788 Pattern swords. Le Marchant opined that the "blades of the Turks, Mamelukes, Moors, and Hungarians (were) preferable to any other." He gave the blade of this saber a pronounced curve, which made it more adept at cavalry attack methods, and designed it with a widened tip that affected the balance, but made slashes far more brutal. It was issued primarily to British light dragoons and hussars and was also used by the King's German Legion light cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars. The blade profile became so popular that the Prussians and other German states emulated its design throughout the 19th century.

Good sword but...
Blade is well heat-treated and decently sharpened. The scabbard fits well. Yes, there's wavyness, but the originals had that, and this isn't a $1000 sword. My only complaint is that they sharpened the back for about a foot from the tip. This is not correct for the pattern.

Far better than cold steel, but still issues
Just received my sword, and immediately compared it to the cold steel 1796 I had on hand. The distal taper and balance was almost shockingly good from the windlass compared to the cold steel. Came razor sharp as well, cut through bottles like they were butter. In all ways I could safely say it surpassed my cold steel version. That being said, I still encountered a few issues. First, the the hilt does not line up flush with the steel scabbard. The front of the hilt makes contact (with the leather washer between them), but the rear has enough space to fit a second leather washer between it and the scabbard. Second, the blade is still wavy. Not as bad as my cold steel, but still not great. Third, the leather on the grip looks like it was sanded at one point, exposing bare wood on one side. This doesn’t effect performance but it is visually unappealing. And lastly, there’s an area about halfway down the edge (near center) where it looks like it was ground too much. Looking down the edge it’s almost perfectly straight and even until this point, you could almost call it a gouge that had an edge put on it. I love the way this 1796 by windlass cuts and handles, but there are too many imperfections for me to ignore. Hopefully in the future they have better quality control, hope no others encounter the same issues I had.
